Why We Have Stage Fright

Having a bout of stage fright is an embarrassing experience for anyone. There are some who have the talent for the performing arts but shrink at the very thought of going up on stage and actually performing before an audience. Others experience this either when they have to give a speech in front of class or do a briefing with their boss.

Stage fright is caused by many factors. Scientifically, when you are put in a “threatening” situation, your body responds naturally with an adrenaline rush which causes your systems to go haywire and the “what should I do?” mode kicks in. It could also be having a traumatic experience in the past, being unprepared and pessimistic, lacking self esteem, or fearing rejection or disapproval from your audience.

In summary, if you begin to understand what causes your fear of being in front of an audience and how to handle it, you will find it easier to seek ways to prevent this occurrence in the future.
