Sex as Performance Arts

Not all films, stories or articles about sex depict pornography. There are films that show sex in a particular way that it presents the act as a performance or art. Pornography may be centred on the actors’ sexual actions, their movements, carnality as well as physical performance. However, there are films that show actors that experiment with this concept. In such films, what is given focus and attention is not the sexual act, but how the actors portray their roles.

Depicting sex in a film becomes a form of performance arts because the artists use their bodies, face and presence as the medium. To further explain why sex is an art, films that use sex as a theme have actors (also considered artists) who will act out stories using combinations of speech, gesture, sound and spectacle. When it comes to depicting sex, there is a thin line between pornography and art. This is where the artists’ talents will come into play. It will be how they portray their roles that will differentiate art from pornography. It is also up to the audience how they should perceive the story being shown to them.
